Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin has closed an $11.6 billion deal to acquire satellite operator Globalstar Inc., a move that comes as the space company gains momentum in its rivalry with SpaceX. The acquisition, announced this month, aims to launch a direct-to-device service competing with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet, which operates in Bastrop County and is projected to be worth $200 billion in the coming years. Blue Origin also won a U.S. Space Force contract to build a new launch site for super-heavy rockets at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, beating SpaceX’s bid for a Starship site in South Texas. The decision marks a strategic shift for the U.S. military, which previously favored SpaceX for multiple launches.

The Globalstar deal follows recent U.S. government decisions favoring Blue Origin, including a 2023 contract for National Security Space Launch missions. Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket, set for its first launch April 19 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, is positioned to challenge SpaceX’s dominance in commercial rocket launches. SpaceX, which has conducted over 100 missions since 2020, remains the industry leader but faces increasing pressure from Bezos’ company, which has expanded its presence in Brevard County and Texas.

Starlink, SpaceX’s most lucrative venture, has faced competition from Blue Origin’s proposed service, which would offer broadband internet directly to consumer devices. The U.S. Space Force’s selection of Blue Origin for the Vandenberg site highlights growing interest in alternative launch providers. SpaceX’s Starship, under development at Starbase in South Texas, remains a key focus for Musk, but delays in its testing schedule have allowed Blue Origin to close deals with both private and government clients.

Local analysts note the competition is reshaping Brevard County’s aerospace sector, with Blue Origin’s Cape Canaveral operations and SpaceX’s presence in nearby Kennedy Space Center driving job growth and investment. However, SpaceX’s existing infrastructure and track record continue to give it an edge in the race for commercial and government contracts.
