Eastern Florida State College’s Melbourne campus buzzed with activity today as the Backyard BBQ & Family Fest brought together students, families, and community members for a day of food, fun, and scholarship support. The event, held on the college’s main quad, aimed to raise money for student financial aid programs. Volunteers grilled burgers and hot dogs while attendees browsed booths featuring crafts, games, and information about campus life. The festival is part of the college’s ongoing efforts to connect with the local community and highlight opportunities for student success. 'This event is a great way to show our support for students who need help paying for college,' said one attendee, a parent of a current EFSC student. The college has hosted similar festivals in past years, but this year’s event saw increased participation from local businesses, which donated food, prizes, and raffle items. Organizers estimated hundreds attended, though exact numbers were not available. The funds raised will go directly to scholarships for students enrolled at EFSC’s Melbourne campus, which serves more than 12,000 students annually. College officials emphasized that the event is not just about fundraising but also about building relationships. 'We want people to see the campus as a place where their families can thrive,' said a spokesperson. The festival ran from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and included live music, face painting, and a silent auction. Weather remained mild throughout the day, with temperatures in the mid-70s.
