Astronaut High School's junior varsity football team fell to Cocoa Beach 36-0 on September 5 in a non-conference matchup at Cocoa Beach High School. The War Eagles, who entered the game with a 2-4 record, were outscored in all four quarters by the Minutemen, who improved to 3-3-1 with the win. The game, played in front of a sparse crowd, saw Cocoa Beach dominate from the start. Astronaut didn't register a point, with the War Eagles' defense unable to stop the Minutemen's offense. Cocoa Beach's offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage, allowing running backs to gain consistent yardage.
Astronaut head coach John Martinez said after the game that his team struggled with execution on both sides of the ball. 'We didn't play to our potential,' Martinez said. 'We have a lot of work to do before our next game.'
The loss drops Astronaut to 2-5 overall, while Cocoa Beach moves to 3-3-1. Both teams are scheduled to play next week, with Astronaut hosting West Palm Beach and Cocoa Beach traveling to Satellite Beach.
This is the second straight non-conference loss for Astronaut's JV team, which has yet to win a game outside its district this season. The War Eagles are expected to face tougher competition in upcoming weeks as they prepare for district play.
