"Cumulus clouds can generate static electricity as the spacecraft ascends," Burris explained. "Historically, this has led to lightning strikes that could damage the rocket."

Weather constraints include avoiding launches during extreme solar activity or when peak winds exceed 33-45 mph. The most critical factor is the flight path staying clear of cumulus clouds within 10 nautical miles of the launch pad. Burris noted that three 500-foot wind towers around the rocket are providing real-time data to assess these conditions. "We’re working around a 10-mile span around the launch pad," he said. "If the atmosphere isn’t stable, we delay."

Residents along Florida’s Atlantic coast, from Cape Canaveral to Daytona Beach, may see the rocket’s ascent and hear the engines roar. However, inland areas and the Gulf Coast will have limited visibility due to the rocket’s trajectory over the ocean. The launch could be visible as far west as Orlando, though clouds may obscure the view.

The Artemis II mission, carrying four astronauts, is a critical step in NASA’s lunar exploration program. A successful launch tonight would mark the first crewed test flight of the Space Launch System rocket since Artemis I in 2022.
