Artemis II launch draws thousands to Space Coast, straining local accommodations

The park, which offers a panoramic view of the Kennedy Space Center’s launch pads, has become a hub for visitors hoping to witness the historic Artemis II moon mission. "We’ve had people camping in their trucks and RVs just to secure a spot," Carson said. "It’s the biggest surge we’ve seen since the Space Shuttle era."

For many, the experience is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Joann Rawn, who arrived with her husband, said the proximity to the launch site is "exhilarating." "We can walk to the viewing area, and I’m hoping to hear the roar of the engines," she said. Tabb Adams, a tourist from Georgia, called the event a "bucket list moment." "I missed the shuttle launches, so I’m here to see humans go to the moon again," he added.

Local businesses are reaping the benefits. Carson plans to host a launch party at his new event center along the Indian River. However, overcrowding has become a challenge. Jerry Stence, a Fort Lauderdale resident camping in his truck at Space View Park, said his pets are "cramped" but "manageable." "I’ve been here since Monday, and it’s packed," he said. Meanwhile, some visitors, like Adams, have adapted to the conditions. "I’m cooking all our meals here," he said. "It’s just home away from home."

With liftoff scheduled for November 14, officials warn that viewing areas may reach capacity by Friday. The Kennedy Space Center has urged visitors to arrive early and follow safety guidelines, as the influx of people has also raised concerns about traffic and emergency response times.
