Brevard County Sheriff's Office officials confirmed an armed suspect surrendered around 7:15 p.m. Friday after a standoff that began around 2:30 p.m. near the Cocoa Beach Inlet. The incident occurred on the northern end of the beach, a popular spot for fishermen and kayakers. No injuries were reported during the encounter. Sheriff Wayne Ivey said deputies used a negotiator to de-escalate the situation, which involved a man in his 30s armed with a handgun.
The suspect was identified as Michael J. Thompson, 34, of Cocoa. According to the sheriff's office, Thompson was found with a loaded .380 caliber pistol and a small amount of methamphetamine when he surrendered. Deputies said the man had no prior criminal history but was experiencing a mental health crisis. The standoff involved about 20 officers from the sheriff's office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Residents in the area described hearing loud noises and seeing a large police presence but said the situation remained contained. Local business owner Lisa Martinez, who lives near the inlet, said she called 911 after seeing a man pacing near the water's edge. "It was scary, but the police handled it well," she said.
Thompson was taken into custody and charged with resisting arrest and possession of a firearm. He was booked into the Brevard County Jail and is expected to appear in court Monday. Sheriff Ivey said the department is working with mental health professionals to determine the next steps for Thompson. "Our priority was keeping the public safe while ensuring the suspect received the care he needed," Ivey said in a statement.
