Amazon has invested more than $400 million across Brevard County since 2020, creating over 440 jobs and supporting 2,000 indirect positions last year. The company’s expansion includes a 1.2 million-square-foot warehouse in West Melbourne that will add 1,000 full-time roles. Amazon’s presence is visible daily through delivery vans traversing areas from Micco to Mims, but its most significant project remains hidden: Amazon Leo, a satellite internet initiative competing with SpaceX’s Starlink. The company plans to launch over 3,000 satellites from Cape Canaveral, positioning the Space Coast as a key hub for satellite processing and launches. Lynda Weatherman, president and CEO of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast, highlighted Amazon’s impact. “It provides job opportunities from the whole of the skill mix,” she said. The company’s rapid investment and job creation set it apart as a major economic force in the county. Amazon’s warehouses in Melbourne and Cocoa, built after permit applications in late 2020, have already generated 440 jobs, with the West Melbourne facility expected to add 1,000 more. The Economic Development Commission noted that Amazon’s investment has occurred in a short timeframe, offering diverse employment options from entry-level to technical roles. The company’s satellite project, though not publicly detailed, aims to deliver high-speed internet globally, with Cape Canaveral serving as a central launch site. Weatherman emphasized the significance of Amazon’s commitment to Brevard. “The scale of their investment and the range of jobs they’re creating is unique,” she said. Amazon’s operations continue to reshape the local economy, with more than $400 million in capital invested and thousands of jobs—direct and indirect—supported since 2020.
