Addison Balavender, a senior at Melbourne High School, has been named FLORIDA TODAY's All-Space Coast softball pitcher of the year. The honor recognizes her performance during the 2023 season, which included a 14-3 record on the mound and a 1.82 earned-run average. Balavender, who also led her team in strikeouts with 167, is the first pitcher from Melbourne High to receive the award since 2018.
Balavender's selection comes after a strong senior season that helped Melbourne High reach the regional semifinals. Her coach, Jason Thompson, said she 'consistently delivered in high-pressure moments' and 'set the tone for our team's defense.' Balavender also played a key role in the team's 2023 district championship win, earning game MVP honors in the final against Westside High.
Layna Ayala, a junior at Satellite High School, was also named to the All-Space Coast team as a utility player. Ayala, who plays multiple positions including shortstop and outfield, had a .382 batting average and 24 stolen bases this season. Her teammate, pitcher Emily Rodriguez, was named to the honorable mention list.
The All-Space Coast team is selected by a panel of coaches and sports writers from Brevard County. This year's team includes players from six schools across the county, with selections based on performance in the Florida High School Athletic Association's 6A and 7A classifications. The award ceremony will take place on May 12 at the Melbourne Regional Convention Center.
