A local cat rescue volunteer told FOX 35 she worries stray cats that took shelter there may be trapped as workers quickly board up windows. Contractors are conducting daily sweeps and coordinating with animal control to address the concern.
The complex has frustrated Palm Bay leaders and residents for years. Neighbors raised safety concerns in early 2025 after the vacant lot deteriorated into a site of rotting wood, shattered glass, and crumbling balconies. The property’s condition worsened as developers failed to complete construction, leaving the area vulnerable to trespassers and wildlife.
City officials declined to comment on the timeline for full cleanup but confirmed the new developer is in talks to take over the project. The current phase focuses on securing the site before further work begins. Residents say they hope the process is handled carefully to avoid harming animals that have made the abandoned complex their temporary home.
