Approximately 250 Brevard County residents took their military oaths Friday evening at Viera High School Stadium during a ceremony hosted by Brevard Public Schools. The event marked one of the largest enlistment ceremonies in Central Florida this year, with participants ranging from recent high school graduates to older adults pursuing military careers. The oath-taking took place under stadium lights as families, school officials, and military representatives watched from the stands.
The ceremony included a formal procession, speeches from local leaders, and a moment of silence for fallen service members. Among the attendees was Viera High School Principal Maria Lopez, who said the event highlighted the community’s strong ties to the military. 'We’ve had over 200 students from this school alone enlist since 2020,' she said. 'It’s a proud moment for our district.'
The enlistees, who will be distributed across the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard, included 12 students from the Brevard County School District’s military junior ROTC program. Some had already signed contracts before graduating, while others made their decisions on the spot. 'I knew I wanted to serve since I was 16,' said 18-year-old Jacob Martinez, a Viera High graduate. 'This is just the beginning.'
The event followed a similar ceremony in 2025, which saw 230 enlistees. Organizers said the increase this year reflects growing interest in military careers amid rising college costs and economic uncertainty. 'We’re seeing more people choose service as a viable path,' said event coordinator Tom Harris. 'It’s a testament to the opportunities available here.'
