A 160-acre wildfire erupted at The Compound, a residential community in Palm Bay, early Tuesday, damaging one home but leaving no one injured, officials said. The fire burned through scrubland and open areas near the eastern edge of the property before crews contained it. "We’re fortunate no one was hurt," said Palm Bay Fire Chief Mark Thompson. "Our teams worked quickly to protect structures." Firefighters from Palm Bay, Melbourne, and Titusville arrived within 20 minutes of the initial call, using air tankers and ground crews to suppress the flames. The blaze was fully extinguished by late morning, though smoke lingered for hours. The damaged home, located on the western side of the community, sustained roof and exterior wall damage, according to a spokesperson for The Compound. No residents were inside at the time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with authorities considering whether dry vegetation or equipment malfunction could be to blame. The Compound, which spans over 1,500 acres, is home to more than 200 residences and features shared recreational spaces. Neighbors described the area as typically quiet, though recent dry weather has raised concerns about fire risks. "It’s a wake-up call," said resident Linda Carter, who watched the flames from her backyard. "We’re lucky it didn’t spread further." The Brevard County Fire Marshal’s Office is reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. No arrests have been made. Meanwhile, The Compound is offering temporary housing to affected residents. "Our priority is safety and support," said community manager Sarah Lee.
