Brevard woman charged with DUI after deputies say she hit and killed a horse, then drove home
Deputies allege Anne Cross struck a horse on Lake Washington Road and drove home. Their announced charges concern DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to testing.
Anne Cross faces driving-under-the-influence charges after a witness reported a vehicle striking a horse on Lake Washington Road in Melbourne on Wednesday night, Sept. 30, and leaving, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies and the Florida Highway Patrol found the horse dead.
What the announced charges cover
Sheriff Wayne Ivey listed three charges: DUI, refusal to submit to testing, and DUI with damage to property. Although authorities describe the incident as a hit-and-run, that announced list does not include a charge for leaving the scene. The charges are allegations.
The investigation
Investigators later found Cross and the damaged vehicle at her home. The sheriff said she told deputies she had been shopping and thought something that landed on her hood might have been a deer. He described a crushed hood and heavily damaged windshield.
Deputies reported glassy eyes and slurred speech. Cross refused field sobriety exercises and a breath test, the sheriff said.
WESH reported that Cross denied drinking and was released after posting an $11,000 bond.
The Florida Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation, while Brevard deputies conducted the DUI investigation. FOX 35 and WFTV reported that the crash investigation remained open.
