Satellite Beach dog-beach correction: pilot expiry and council action
The pilot expired April 30. Council directed staff to draft an ordinance September 9; the city’s current beach guidance still prohibits pets.
Correction — October 20, 2026: Our September 9 article misstated the pilot's end date, the council discussion date, the advisory boards' names and their vote. This correction removes named quotations we could not verify and distinguishes the council's drafting decision from permission to bring pets onto the beach.
The city's January–February 2026 Beachcaster says the council approved the pilot on December 3, 2025. It allowed dogs on all city beaches January 1–April 30, 2026, from 5–10 a.m., with leashes no longer than seven feet, immediate cleanup and no access to dunes. It was set to expire April 30 unless the council acted again.
At the September 9 council meeting, staff reported a joint 7–3 recommendation by the Sustainability Board and Recreation Board against allowing dogs on the beach. The city-hosted transcript records a subsequent 3–2 council vote directing staff to return with a proposed ordinance. That direction did not reopen the beaches to pets; an ordinance would need further council readings.
As checked October 20, the city's Beach Parks and Accesses page says pets are not allowed on Satellite Beach beaches. The expired pilot and the direction to draft an ordinance should not be used as current permission.
