Florida’s redesigned IDs: what Brevard residents need to know before replacing a card

Space Shuttle Discovery appears on the new design. Valid cards do not need an immediate swap, and Brevard residents should check the service type before booking a renewal.

Florida is introducing a redesigned driver license and identification card with a Space Coast detail: Space Shuttle Discovery appears on the back. For Brevard residents, the immediate decision is simpler than the artwork: a valid existing card does not need to be replaced just to get the new design.

Keep a valid card; plan around your actual renewal

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles announced September 30 as the statewide service-center rollout date. Its September 29 announcement says currently valid credentials remain valid until they expire. A required update, such as a name or address change, is a separate reason to replace a card.

Online timing needs a check before ordering specifically for the new artwork. The announcement and the introduction to the state design page say early November, while that page’s Getting Your New Card section says by the end of November. Neither supports promising the new design with an online order today. Check the state guidance and MyDMV Portal before choosing that route.

Choose the right Brevard appointment

For an in-person renewal, replacement or new credential, the Brevard County Tax Collector lists Driver License/ID Card as the appointment service type. A written knowledge exam or road test uses a different appointment category. Name changes must be handled in person; address changes can be made online through MyDMV Portal.

The county suggests appointments and reserves them for Brevard residents. Walk-ins are limited and may involve a long wait. Each person needs a separate appointment, including family members; one reservation cannot be shared.

Limited Saturday appointments are for driver license renewals only, with no weekend walk-in service. Dates and locations vary. Use the county service-type page to reach the relevant booking link and confirm the service before making a trip; this article does not establish that a particular appointment is available.

Where the Space Coast appears

Discovery is part of a broader Florida-themed design. The front includes Castillo de San Marcos, an orange incorporated into the state name, a manatee and an alligator within the REAL ID star. The illustration above comes from the state’s announcement and shows sample credentials, not a resident’s personal card.

Source check: September 30, 2026. The practical distinction is between a routine renewal or required update and an optional change of artwork. Use the linked state guidance for the credential rollout and the county guidance for local appointment selection.
