The notice was announced by the Brevard County Water and Sewer Utility on Tuesday after routine testing detected potential contamination risks in the water supply. Residents are urged to boil water for at least one minute before drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth until further notice.
The utility said the issue was identified during a standard maintenance check of the water treatment facility on County Road 429. Officials did not specify the source of the contamination but emphasized no health threats have been confirmed. 'We are taking this step to ensure public safety,' said utility spokesperson Lisa Martinez. 'This is a precaution, not an emergency.'
The boil notice applies to all homes and businesses within the Mims service area, which spans 12 square miles east of Titusville. The notice comes as the utility faces increased pressure to upgrade aging infrastructure. A 2022 audit found 18% of the system’s pipes are over 50 years old. While the current issue is unrelated to infrastructure, officials said the findings have accelerated plans for a $12 million pipeline replacement project.
